Welcome to STEAM Sisters!

Area of concern. A common stereotype of males being inherently more intellectual than females has led to a discrepancy in the number of boys and girls entering STEM-related (science, technology, engineering, and math) careers. It is projected that in the next ten years, the number of STEM jobs will increase by 13% and the need for employees in these fields will significantly increase (Education Commission of the States). Although females make up half of the overall workforce, they fill fewer than 25% of STEM careers (Microsoft). Through our personal experiences at our high schools, we noticed a significant gender imbalance in membership and leadership positions of STEM-related clubs. For example, less than ⅓ of the robotics team members are girls. Therefore, we concluded that this situation is a call to action for us to spread awareness for girls in STEM, specifically in Metro Detroit.

Why art? Considering the various angles to implement a solution to this problem, we were prompted to integrate art into STEM resulting in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) because students can enhance interpretive skills and improve their creativity, resulting in improved confidence. In a study conducted by the Kent State University, researchers concluded that art education gives students the confidence to enjoy the capabilities of STEAM. Confidence drives reassurance and pursuit, which is essential in increasing the percentage of girls in STEAM as a whole.

Our mission. By recognizing the incongruity in statistics relating to boys and girls in STEAM, our team aims to spark STEAM interests for young girls, dissolve the societal stereotypes of women, and generate interest by creating free and engaging STEAM classes for girls. With the opportunity to meet professionals and partake in interactive STEAM activities, girls will feel empowered to follow their aspirations in STEAM.
